When the mind thinks about unhappy thoughts, this amps up stress. When these pop up, come back to the now and think of happier thoughts.
A way to help with this is to start writing down things that make you smile, give peace and also fond memories of love ones and more. When you notice the thoughts straying pull out your list, feel the paper in your hands, read some and connect with happier thoughts.
Have you noticed when something comes up that is a reminder to an uncomfortable event in your past, it can feel like you’re right back in that moment. This is a trigger and it can be intense and uncomfortable.
One thing I used recently was a simple and short mantra. Say it in your head as many times as you need. It helped me recognize this isn’t the same experience I had and I am okay.
Think of some simple mantras and use them when needed.
